Oaxaca’s total population amounts to about 3.5 million inhabitants, of which 52% are women and 48%, are men. In the actual Oaxaca territory live 18 of the 65 ethnic groups of Mexico. These groups are the Mixtec, Zapotec, Triqui, Chatni, Chinanteco, Huave, Mazatec, Amuzgo, Nahua, Zoques, Chontal of Oaxaca, Ciucatecos, Ixcatecos, Chocholteco, Tacuates, afro- mestizos of Costa Chica and to a lesser extent, the Tzotziles, which together surpass one million inhabitants (more than 32%) distributed over 2,563 locations. This makes Oaxaca one of the largest and richest cultural concentrations of Mexico and the world. Regarding the languages, there are 17 spoken as well as the dialect variants. The main economic activity of the population is agriculture, followed by trade.
